If you are planning to attend college in the near future, you should surely have some understanding of how expensive college is. You have to qualify for a scholarship in order to apply for it and actually be considered for it. Some scholarships require certain a grade point average is while others require merely financial need. If most people don’t like writing essays, that means less people will apply and you’ll have less competition.
Next, look online to find college scholarships on websites such as Fastweb.com. These will list the scholarships that are available all across the country. Some of them will have a lot of competition, but some of them will be geared towards you so specifically that the competition is very low. You are probably more likely to get a scholarship from your high school, but you never know for sure. Again, the more you apply to, the more likely you will get more scholarships.
Of course, if you know what school you are going to, check with the college to see if they have any scholarships available. Some offer full tuition scholarships. Others have multiple scholarships, some have full ride scholarships, and others have only a few. Either way, this is another opportunity to find college scholarships.
Another way that most people overlook is through their parents’ employers. Ask your parents to ask around at work to see if there are any scholarships available with their organization. You may be able to get special ones if your parent is a teacher or works in any number of organizations. These are often much easier to get because there is much less competition if it is a small organization.
Start early. The earlier you start looking to find college scholarships, the more you will get and the more you will qualify for. It’s never too early to start looking for them. You might feel like you apply to every one you see and nothing works out. Even if you applied to 100 scholarships and you only get one worth $1000, if it took you about 20 hours of work, that’s $50 an hour. Put the work in and you will reap the rewards.
