Specialty Schools- Know your careers

If you want to be a pharmacist, your local state school may not have your career path available. This goes for many careers. When choosing a college, you need to make sure it has what you want and need.

I’ve heard of students spending lots of money on their dream college and then after starting their first semester, they find out their school doesn’t have the right major. This is obvious to avoid. If you know what you want to major in, go to a school that has your major. Your college experience is nowhere as important as your future career.

If you don’t know what you want to do yet, you can focus on the basics first. Be aware that you might have to transfer.

For instance, if you know you want to go into science or medicine and are seriously considering physical therapy, look for a school that has that program and others catering to your interests. There are still plenty of schools to choose from with specific majors to most fields.

Even if you can just transfer, there are problems with that. All of your credits might not transfer or you might not be able to get in the right classes because transfer students get last priority. You could waste anywhere from 1 semester to 2 years of college coursework and take that much longer to graduate.

If you don’t mind taking longer to graduate, then it’s fine, but it will cost more. If you’d rather choose the right career and be happy, then take a little extra time in school.

If you already know what you’re going to do, things will be a lot easier, but don’t make this pressure you into a career you don’t like. College is such a small part of your life compared to your career, the right choice is always going to be top priority.
