What are my choices? Different possible career paths
When you begin your search for careers, you will want to consider all areas. If you plan on going to college, some basic areas you can go into are medicine, education, business, the arts, and others.
Medicine
If you have a desire to help people and love science, you may want to search for a career in medicine. You could be a physician, like the regular doctor you see every year. If you’re still young, you might see a pediatrician, which is a specific physician for children.
If you’re not interested in this, you could specialize. You may want to be a pharmacist, dermatologist, orthodontist, dentist, surgeon, or any other specialized medical career. There are lots!
If you don’t feel like spending eight years in college but you still want to go into medicine, you can become a nurse. If you’re only looking for an associate’s degree, you still have lots of choices, x-ray technicians, pharmacy technicians, and physical therapist’s assistant only require an associates degree and still get you in the field as well as pay well.
Business
You can do so many things in business because there are several distinct areas.
If you are interested in managing money such as investing, a degree in accounting or finance may be perfect. I would recommend getting a degree in accounting because you can do almost everything with an accounting degree that you can do with a finance degree plus more, but it doesn’t go the same in reverse. You could even double major and only take an extra semester or so.
A management degree also opens up many doors. Every business has management. If you go into this field, you may start out low as some time of assistant manager, but after working your way up you could reach as far as CEO, chief executive officer.
Marketing is another area in business that is completely different from the rest. You will learn how to advertise and pull in customers for a business. It can be a fascinating area to get into.
International business is a good area to go into if you speak another language, love to travel the world, or both. But don’t think you will just be traveling the world on constant vacations. Business is business and still hard work.
The stock market has a wide variety of careers. Stock brokers make some of the highest incomes in the world. Of course, if that’s your priority, you may find it very stressful.
Education
I’m sure you all have that one teacher you loved and maybe you want to be just like them. Many teachers, and others, say a career is very rewarding, and hard work.
If you love kids, elementary schools may be the way to go, but may be you’ll find teaching high school or college more intellectually stimulating.
You can branch out from the standard classroom teacher and get certified in a specific area such as reading, math, or special education.
You could even decide to be a principle or high school counselor if you like the school setting but don’t want to be a teacher.
The Arts
There are many different areas of art to go into including fine art such as painting, drawing, and sculpture, and performing arts such as music, theatre, and acting.
A lot if people in this area get discourage by others or themselves. If they aren’t getting the right recognition, they assume they can only teach. This is why it takes hard work and perserverance.
While teaching is great, talent, hard work, and drive just might land you an acting part or a space in Carnegy hall or the Met.
Don’t give up on your dreams too quickly, but know your own limits.
Anything else?
There are so many other careers and areas to go into such as law, creative writing, and government jobs. Check out the list of careers in the career database for more information on specific careers.
