Interview Part II

Where to Start

The way you present yourself at an interview is very important. Everyone will tell you it’s all about first impressions. It’s not necessary to wear a suit and tie to your supermarket interview, but you should still be neat and presentable. No jeans, sneakers, or wrinkled clothes. Wear khakis and a nice dress shirt, or blouse for girls, and your interviewer will be impressed.

If you are interview for a clerical job or an internship in a formal environment, a skirt or suit and tie may be appropriate. Use your own discretion and think wisely.

When you dress inappropriately, the interviewer has a lot of room to think poorly of you. If you don’t care about how you dress for the interview, are you going to be able to follow the dress code and be able to dress appropriately at work?

Even if you just dress okay, you’re not really making a good impression. By dressing only acceptably, they might not criticize you for it. If you dress impeccably, they will take notice and use it in your favor.

While dressing appropriately, still make sure that you are comfortable. If your shoes are bothering you throughout the whole interview, you won’t be able to concentrate on the questions and what is important.

Time

Also tied into first impressions is the time you get there. If the interview is at 10:15, get there between 9:45 and 10:00. I don’t even consider it acceptable if you just get there on time. By being early, you will hopefully not be help back by traffic and it shows dedication to your possible employer. You really want this job, that’s why you’re early.

If you can’t make it to an interview on time, you won’t be able to make it to work on time, and that’s not what they want. Punctuality is one of the top important aspects at any job.

If you are held up and are going to be late, call the job and let them no. Being late might affect the way they will rate you, but calling in will help and you can at least try to make it up in the rest of the interview.

If you just don’t show up, that doesn’t look good. Obviously by not showing up you know you just won’t get this particular job, but it may hurt you in the future. Sometimes things like these come back to haunt you, especially when your application is still there and your name is still out there. Names can be easily remembered especially if you make a habit of not showing up. Don’t earn yourself a bad reputation. Show you really care and will do anything to get this job.
